Ancient Rhythms: The Creation of 'Turkish Coffee'
A canceled flight, a hidden Istanbul café, and centuries-old traditions led to DJ Wedoo + the Glitches' most culturally rich coffee track.

The journey to create 'Turkish Coffee' began with a travel mishap that turned into musical serendipity. The band was scheduled for a brief stopover in Istanbul while flying between European tour dates, but an airline strike left them stranded for three days. Rather than staying at the airport hotel, they decided to explore the city's historic coffee culture.
Through a local musician they'd met at a previous show, the band was introduced to a fifth-generation coffee master who ran a small, centuries-old café hidden in a quiet corner of the Grand Bazaar. This kahveci (coffee maker) invited them to observe the elaborate, ritualistic preparation of traditional Turkish coffee—a method largely unchanged for over 500 years.
Fascinated by both the technical precision and cultural significance of the process, DJ Wedoo asked permission to record the sounds—the rhythmic grinding of beans in brass mills, the gentle bubbling of coffee in copper cezves (small long-handled pots), and the distinctive tap-tap-tap as the master tapped the side of the pot three times before serving, a gesture steeped in tradition.
What makes this track special is its authentic incorporation of traditional Turkish instruments. When the coffee master learned about the band's project, he introduced them to his son—a professional oud player—and several other local musicians. That evening, an impromptu collaboration took place in the ancient café, with electronic beats merging with oud, kanun (a type of zither), and bendir (a frame drum), creating a unique fusion of centuries-old traditions and modern production techniques.
The lyrics, inspired by conversations with the coffee master, touch on the fortune-telling tradition of reading the coffee grounds left in the cup—symbolizing how our present actions leave patterns that hint at our future. Recording took place overnight in the empty café, with the ambient sounds of distant calls to prayer and early morning market vendors becoming subtle elements in the track's atmospheric backdrop.
When 'Turkish Coffee' was released, the band sent a professional recording system to the café as a thank you, allowing the owner's son to start a small studio preserving traditional music. The café now plays the track for visitors, proudly explaining their contribution to its creation. What began as a travel disruption became one of the most culturally authentic tracks on the album, connecting listeners to coffee traditions that have brought people together for centuries.
